How to Get from Phuket Airport to Karon and Kata

Karon and Kata are two side-by-side beach areas on the south-west coast of Phuket, popular with families and couples who want a calmer, prettier alternative to Patong. They’re a bit further from Phuket Airport (HKT) than Patong, so it’s worth knowing what to expect on the ride down.

How far is Phuket Airport to Karon and Kata?

From HKT, Karon Beach is about 46 km and 60–75 minutes; Kata Beach is about 48 km and 60–80 minutes. The two beaches are only 2–3 minutes apart by car, so the airport drive is essentially the same.

The route

From HKT you head south on Highway 402, then transition onto the west-coast road that passes Cherngtalay, Surin, Kamala, and the steep ridge above Patong before descending into Karon and Kata. The last stretch through the Patong/Karon hill is the slowest part if there is afternoon traffic.

What does it cost?

A pre-booked private Phuket airport taxi to Karon or Kata is the easiest option. You get a flat rate in Thai Baht, agreed before travel, with no meter surprises. For an exact quote for your hotel, send us a WhatsApp message.

Pre-booked private taxi vs. arriving at the airport without a plan

On arrival at HKT you’ll see desks and freelance drivers offering rides. They can work, but prices are inconsistent and it can be stressful after a long flight. A pre-booked private taxi removes that decision-making — your driver is already waiting with a name sign and knows exactly which Karon or Kata hotel to take you to.

Tips for the Karon / Kata airport ride

  • Allow 3 hours before international departures, 2 hours before domestic.
  • Late afternoon (3–6 pm) is the slowest time to travel between HKT and Karon/Kata.
  • If you’re traveling with kids, request a child seat in advance.
  • Many travelers add a quick stop at Karon Viewpoint on the way back to the airport.
  • Book the return at the same time as the arrival — same driver, same price, less hassle.

What to do once you arrive in Karon/Kata

Karon Beach is the longer of the two and great for sunset walks. Kata Beach is more family-oriented and excellent for swimming. Beyond the beaches, easy short trips include Karon Viewpoint (the “three beaches” lookout), Promthep Cape, Big Buddha, and Old Phuket Town. We can take you to all of them as a private driver day.
