Phuket With Kids: Car Seats, Safe Taxis, and Family-Friendly Routes
Phuket is one of Thailand's best family destinations — kid-friendly resorts, big water parks, white-sand beaches, the gentle shallows of Karon and Kata, and Thai food most kids love. But the part that worries many families before they arrive is getting around the island. Do taxis have car seats? Are the roads safe? Are prices fair?
This guide answers the questions parents ask most often.
Car seats in Phuket — what you need to know
Thai law requires children under 6 to be in a car seat in private vehicles, but enforcement is loose. Most public taxis and minivans do not carry child seats by default.
You have three practical options:
- Bring your own. Most airlines check car seats free as extra luggage. This is the safest and most familiar option for the child, but you have to lug it through the airport.
- Request one in advance from your driver. Good private taxi operators provide a car seat free when stock is available. Tell them the child's age and weight at booking. PhuketSafeTaxi includes free child seats when in stock.
- Rent from a car hire company. Some rental firms rent child seats by the day for 100–200 THB. Useful if you're planning to drive yourself.
Family-friendly areas of Phuket
Not all Phuket beach areas are equal for families. The basics:
- Karon, Kata, Nai Yang. Long beaches, shallow water, calm in the morning and late afternoon. Excellent for small kids.
- Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao. Cleaner beaches, 5-star family resorts, and plenty of distance from the Patong nightlife — much more relaxed for families.
- Patong. Beautiful by day, busy by night. Many families stay here happily, but be careful around Bangla Road in the evening.
- Rawai, Nai Harn. Quiet, suits families who want calm — but far from the big attractions, so plan your transport.
Day trips kids love
- Splash Jungle Water Park (near the airport) or Blue Tree (Cherng Talay). Easy half-day; driver waits in the parking area.
- Phuket FantaSea (Kamala). Evening cultural show; driver drops and picks up after the show ends.
- Big Buddha + Wat Chalong + Old Phuket Town. A relaxed half-day cultural loop. Older kids enjoy the Old Town walking street.
- James Bond Island boat tour (departs Ao Po pier). Full day; driver does hotel ↔ pier transfer with you.
- Karon-Kata beach day. Drive up to Karon Viewpoint then come back down for dinner.
Practical tips for traveling with kids in Phuket
- Avoid scooters with kids. Phuket roads are not the place for it.
- Build in 15 minutes of slack on every trip — small kids and bathrooms.
- Bring snacks, water, and a cool towel for the car. Heat shortens kids' patience fast.
- Hire a private driver for the day rather than finding new transport at every stop.
- Tell the driver in advance if you'll need a fuel stop or a 7-Eleven break.
Why families choose PhuketSafeTaxi
Sukumaporn and Pansa are both moms and understand that traveling with children takes patience. We offer free child seats when in stock, drive smoothly, allow bathroom stops, and time arrivals so kids aren't pushed past their limit. Many returning families now book the same driver every visit — because the child remembers them.
